History
The Reef Hotel was built in 1972.It was the second main tourist hotel on the north coast after the Nyali beach hotel and welcomed the first waves of tourists who were to discover Mombasa as an international sea aside tourism town eventually.
Opening with 96 rooms, the Hotel made some architectural tremors when its roofs were all built of Makuti, a decision that was to pioneer the style of many hotels at the coast after that. The ocean side was all sand dunes and soil had to be brought in by the tons to manage to grow a garden which is now considered one of the finest and best managed on the north coast. Today the hotel has expanded and grown in many ways but still remains essentially a hotel where all guests are known to the staff and you are never just another face in the restaurant or garden. Many of our clients have been coming to us for over 20 years, some stay with us for months at a time, and some who came as young guests return with their families. The Reef is a home away from home for many of our repeat clients and we extend the same warm welcome to all our new guests. For the younger generation we now offer a popular bar on the beach, whilst the older generation may relax at the pool side listening to the more calm music and entertainment provided for by the hotel every evening.
